For this assignment, we had to search where the cookies are stored on our computer and list the "top10" of the cookies that we found and make a brief report describing the kind of sites that placed the cookies.

 

First, I have to define what is exactly a cookie. Hopefully, I found a good definition in my course book "E-commerce 2014,10E by Kenneth Laudon. According to the book, a cookie is " a tool used by Web sites to store information about a user. When a visitor enters a Web site, the site sends a small text file (the cookie) to the user's computer so that information from the site can be loaded more quickly on future visits. The cookie can contain any information desired by the site designers."

 

The main problem with the use of cookies is the privacy because they allow to store some information about a user. Why is it considered as a threat for the consumers privacy? Just because they are used by advertisers to track your behaviour on different websites without telling you. They are very important on Web sites because they permit to practise some customization and marketing segmentation (= one-to-one relationships with customers. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cookies in a simple words are just a kind of tracking files.

Concerning their advantages or disadvantages, I think that it is really depend on the point of view of each persons. As advantage, cookies are easy to use and they are directly stored on the client of the user. It is also more easier for advertisers to personalize your browsing experience because with the help of cookies, they know who you are what you like,...

As disadvantage, users have the possibility to decline the presence of cookies on their computers. Not everyone are collecting our information for good reasons.

 

Actually I am using the Safari browser on Mac and here are the top 10 of the cookies that I found on my computers :

3. Alibaba : This a famous chinese Web site where you can buy clothes, shoes etc for a good price.

4. AliceDelice : My mom love cooking so this is a perfect Web site to find different stuff to be a perfect cooker.

5. Bwin : This is a Web site if you like sports and if you like to bet on your favorite team...

6. Cheaptickets : I like to travel and on this Web site, you can find the cheapest fly tickets on the market.

7. Clipconverter : This a Web site to convert a music video from Youtube into a mp3 song.

8. Couleurcafe : I am a music lover and this Web site is the officiles sites of the well-known music festival from Brussels where you can find different information about the artist that are going to performs,...

9. Delijn : I live in the Flemish part of Belgium (Grimbergen) and I regurlarly use this website to know the schedule of my bus,...

10. Easykot : This is a Web site that I used to find an accommodation during my stay in Gent. It is very useful for the students.
